Yeah, the bad part was I spent hours before the trip going through it, applying patches, etc. Nothing like getting a phone call with the distinctive squeal of a hardware failure in the back. Decent little machine for $400 though (it would have cost $300 to rent one for the weekend.)

It came with Home, or Basic, or whatever it is called so we don't really have any features on it. Other than its slower than XP and the UI is different. We'll probably keep Vista installed rather than pay for another XP license and maybe once Windows 7 comes out, load that on it.

SUCK!

The jury is still out for me. There's a lot of cool stuff with ultimate like the media center, but there's been a lot of pain too. Right now, I just don't want to rebuild a machine, as it would take the better of a full weekend, while also leaving Amanda's school files unavailable. The machine functions as SageTV recorder, file serer, print server, ftp, web, media center. Most drives being mirrored for safety.

Vista caused me actual physical pain when I tried to use it today. My old laptop fried while traveling and we were in desperate need and bought a cheap Compaq. Why would any company decide to radically change the interface to its OS and core programs (Office 2007 anyone?) I literally got a headache after trying to get past the shiny and try to unistall all the crap that came preloaded on it. I may have just firmly stepped into the Cupertino/Torvalds crowd permanently.
